Day 7: Animation with Spine

I took some of the knowledge I learned in spine courses/tutorials and applied it to my game! I learned how to use spine animations inside Game Maker!

Learning to animate with Spine and import those animations into Game Maker was SO amazing! I love sharing my journey with everyone and can’t wait to see where this game dev journey takes me. Today, I worked on the basics of animations and used them in Game Maker with a simple animation handler. I am using the animations directly from Spine and utilizing their JSON export. My workflow from Procreate to Photoshop to Spine to Game Maker is polished and working nicely. I should be able to work on some more assets to get into the game and start building something by the weekend!

What I learned on day 7:

  • Spine animations work great in Game Maker
  • Simple animations may look easy, but they are NOT easy
  • I learned a little bit about the basics of keyframe animation in Spine
  • I learned how to attach bones and setup skeletons for animation rigging
  • I learned how to export and import characters with Spine
  • I learned how to switch animations using the built in Spine functions to GML…they are still confusing and poorly documented, but I’m learning!
