Day 5: Practicing Original Character Art

I learned that I can work from a book and still make some great progress! Today was a lucky day finding this book to work from, and I got inspired to make a new cartoon character version of Key.

On day 5, I decided to purchase a new book. It was meant to be! I went to Joannes to buy some supplies for my partner’s art projects and spotted a book called “The Master Guide to Drawing Cartoons” by Christopher Hart. It’s simply amazing! I don’t get any kickback or anything on that link, it’s just a great resource I’m learning from!

On day 5 I learned:

  • I need to start with rough drafts and doodle lines before going all in on a character
  • I learned that I need to make sure to venture out in cartoon styles, because there are so many styles
  • I got so motivated I did some more art off stream and would love to share it here as well!
  • I still need to work on full body designs, because I’m a little awkward at proportions right now
  • Heads are getting easier to draw, but I need to start with circles

Here are some shots from the stream today!
